Workplace Essentials Vol. 002

Previously, in the first installment of this new series on the blog, I picked out some pieces from The Style Store and put them together, showcasing them as a potential part of your perfect office outfit. Today, I’m going to be sharing about my current obsession: skirts!

Zalora Fall 2014

I love skirts. They’re feminine; come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and prints; and the men don’t get it. That makes it feel like they’re exclusive! Some women out there aren’t the skirt type of girl and that’s perfectly OK. Not everyone’s a shorts type of person, or a tank top kind of person either. But me? I cannot survive without them.

Of course it’s definitely more convenient to be in pants because you can take bigger strides or run after the bus, but skirts add this certain ladylike feel to your entire look. Pair them with heels, no matter how high (or not), and nobody would ask you to help lift that box.

Today I’m going to show you some common styles that suit the workplace. Most of them are from Zalora, where you can actually get many things at an affordable price (and reliable shipping). Do check out their online fashion magazine in Singapore too, where you can get some ideas about what to match your skirts with.

The Classic Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts are a great way to add formality to your look. They go well with blazers and any tops you might have for the office, even frilly ones. Pencil skirts tell others you mean business. They show others that you’re confident enough to be wearing them despite knowing how challenging they can be, especially since they do restrict some form of motion. For those of you who work hard to remain in shape, pencil skirts also let others know (and remind yourself) that you’ve got your life in order – even if you really are in fact having a little break down. The best time to wear them are when you have to make a presentation to a group of people, though really, I wear them almost every day.

10 Reasons to Wear Makeup

Reasons to Wear Makeup

Do you wear makeup? If so, you’re not alone!

Makeup is one of the first loves of my life. I first discovered it when I was 17 or so and the rest is history. I went through several phases in the course of my makeup adventures, from experimenting with shimmer to dabbling in professional makeup artistry. Though you won’t see me lugging around my makeup artist train case anytime in the near future (save for the occasional stage production), I still use makeup quite often!

Here are my top 10 reasons for women to use makeup so much. It’s purely for laughs (with some truth in it), so don’t take it too seriously!

1. Cover up blemishes.

The Number One reason most women buy cosmetic pouches is that we need something to put our concealors in! Not everyone has great skin  – me included – so things like acne, scars, freckles, sun spots, wrinkles and white heads bother us. Makeup is a quick fix for sure, even though it doesn’t always solve the root of the problem. If we suffer from skin conditions like rosacea or vitiligo, makeup helps to even out the skin tone, and we don’t feel so self-conscious when having conversations with others.

2. We feel lousy.

Sometimes we get up from the wrong side of bed. There are days when everything just seems to go wrong, or when things happen to pile up and finally something snaps and all hell breaks lose. The one thing that can make it more bearable is to know that at least we don’t look as horrible as we feel. That’s why we have our go-to lip colour or favourite “Power Combo Look,” such as the understated cat eye-and-mascara to let everyone know that, at least, we still have our dignity.

3. We’re going on a  date!

Especially if it’s a first date. You have no idea how much thought goes into planning our entire outfit, from the texture of our dress (Or would a white crepe top with a tulle skirt be more suitable for an outdoor movie date?) to the colour of our eyeliner! First dates are the reasons best friends stick around with a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, while being your handy assistants in ravaging your closet and dresser. The powder room is now a girls’ hang-out home bar.

My First Hair Perm-and-Dye at X’Pect Studio

You know how to tell when a girl has just gone through a major breakup? She changes her hair. But oh no, it’s not just a normal cut-and-blow session at the salon. Instead, it’s a drastic do-whatever-you-think-looks-best-on-me kind of gamble with the most expensive stylist around. The worse the breakup, the worse the heartache and the more money she’s going to spend.

Anyhow, I suppose you can tell that I’ve had quite an OK romantic life seeing that my hair’s been all sleek and straight (read: boring) for as long as I can remember. Actually, it’s more of needing to save up than anything. I mean, I’d rather spend my hard-earned cash at Shu Uemura or on a lovely vacation at a Balinese villa. That said, you don’t always need a crisis to get your hair done!

I popped by X’Pect Studio one day after work to see what I could get out of a hair makeover. I was tired of my flat, limp hair and wanted something more voluminous and alive. My stylist for the day was Lee, who was very accommodating and gave me lots of options to consider. In the end, we decided upon a layered style with soft waves.

Maku Store Singapore X Laced Ivory: A Collaboration

Maku Store Singapore X Laced Ivory

Audrey Hepburn once said, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, ‘I’m possible!’” On the more literary side, Shakespeare himself expressed, “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.”

Today I’m very happy to let you all in on another piece of good news: I’m collaborating with Maku Store Singapore for the next few months (at least) as one of their preferred bloggers in Singapore! I never thought the day would come, when I would be able to partner up with fashion brands for Laced Ivory, and I’m just so thankful that all these have happened!

Say hello to my first fashion collaboration! A friend of mine, Camy, posted in a Facebook group to ask if any fashion bloggers wanted to collaborate, and I seized the chance. After all, fashion and style are all about having fun, getting to know people and letting your creative juices flow. So I jumped on the bandwagon.

Review & Swatch: The Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Lacquer

Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Lacquer in Opal

Makeup is like goodies to me. Whenever I receive something brand new, it manages to fill my life with some sort of magical fairy dust and rainbow unicorns. That’s why when the mailman delivered the new Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Lacquer, I couldn’t wait to give it a try! The shade I received was Opal, a shimmery shade that I’d been trying to find for quite some time!

Opal is a sheer, sparkling white, where the shimmer bits are both blue and purple. I remember how when I was young, I’d mix some silver paint into a small transparent bottle of water and watch how the shimmer glimmered in the light every time I shook the bottle. I couldn’t stop staring at it – the same with Opal.

I decided to use this shade as a finish for a dark base, OPI’s Eiffel for this Colour. The final effect is gorgeous!

It looks purple from some angles.

My Skinspiration: My Story and Yours

My Skinspiration: My Story and Yours

Do you have skin problems? Do you wish your skin was as flawless as anyone’s on the cover of Vogue? Or is your skin perfect (like some people I know)?

I never had good skin until a few years ago. When I was growing up, in my teen years, I was plagued with horrible acne – some cystic, even – that wouldn’t stop breaking out every single week. It didn’t even take the current breakout to start healing, before the second one would occur. My face was a constant mess and it affected my self esteem greatly.

I visited doctors and my parents spent a fortune on my face. The condition of my skin improved, but it never did completely recover. I won’t go into details on how I transitioned into my current skin, which has never been better, but I can say that my never-ending quest for good skin – which ultimately led to the start of Laced Ivory – did help a lot.
